Parks Victoria is seeking a new operator for the Mount Buffalo Chalet.
Parks Victoria’s General Manager Commercial Business, Andrew Minack, said Parks Victoria would conduct an international search for a new operator.
“We are now working to get a new operator in to re-develop and operate the Mount Buffalo Chalet,” Mr Minack said.
“We will be seeking a commercial operator that will restore the Chalet to its former glory and contribute to the long term development of tourism in the region.
“We want to get the Chalet open. The first step is to do a comprehensive building assessment and set precinct and heritage guidelines.
“Potential partners will be asked to submit their interest in working with Parks Victoria in August to create a landmark development for Victoria.
“We will be looking for a wide range of ideas and options for the Chalet. We will engage the community in the discussion about the future of the Chalet.
“The development and operation of the Chalet will have to respect the environmental and heritage values of the place. The decisions to be made in the coming year will shape the future of the Chalet for generations to come.”
Mr Minack said the existing commitment to a longer lease would strengthen the attraction of the Chalet to tourism operators.
“The selection process, redevelopment and re-opening of the Chalet will take time. It is important that during this process we don’t lose sight of the fact that Mount Buffalo remains a tourism drawcard,” he said.
“Last snow season more than 30,000 people visited the park to enjoy the snow play and cross country skiing facilities.
“This winter Parks Victoria will be supporting the visitor centre and café at Dingo Dell, 12 km of groomed cross country ski- trails and groomed toboggan runs for families.
“And over summer the beautiful camping ground at Lake Catani is regularly booked to its full capacity, with visitors enjoying more than 100 km of walking tracks.”
