Snow on the way

Snow is forecast for Sunday on the opening weekend of the ski season.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Alpine Areas forecast says snow should fall above 1300 metres.

Mount Hotham is forecast to reach a maximum temperature of three degrees and Mount Buller two degrees.

Sunday forecast: Cloudy. Scattered showers and possible thunderstorms, falling as snow above 1300m. Winds north to northwesterly averaging 20 to 35 km/h tending west to northwesterly during the afternoon. Overnight temperatures falling to around 2 with daytime temperatures reaching around 5.

A similar forecast has been issued for the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales.

The bureau predicts a maximum temperature on Sunday of zero degrees for the Thredbo top station.

The chance of daytime snow in NSW is 70 percent above 1500 metres and 90 percent above 1900 metres.

Scattered snow showers are forecast for Monday in both states.
